The Best Christian Devotional Books

As a devotional writer, people ask me often what my recommendations for good devotionals are. (I try not to be insulted that they don’t just choose any of mine, but I digress)

So here’s an updated list of my favorite good devotionals. This is by no means an exhaustive list of Christian devotionals, but these are the best devotionals that I have personally had experience with and have no problem recommending to others.

So here we go, starting with…

Christian Devotionals for Adults

My Utmost for His Highest

Naturally, we’ll start with what may be the grandaddy of them all.

This is one of the most popular devotionals of all time and even one of the most sold Christian books ever. There’s a good reason this devotional has shown staying power since it was first published in 1924.

Even though this devotional is nearly 100 years old (and the source material is even older), the application for believers today is more sound than ever.

It’s not necessary a feel-good, consumer-minded devotional. But this is one of the great strengths of this devotional. It digs deep, and will pierce into your heart and help you re-align your commitment to God, and Him alone.

It has thousands of 5-star reviews on Amazon, and new believers are continually finding amazing value in these great words of wisdom from Oswald Chambers.

Voices From the Past

This one is a very cool devotional, and it can be very hard to find.

It’s compiled from quotes, sermons, excerpts and the like from the Puritans who were pivotal in the movement. Hence the title.

Each day is dense, packed with rich theology and depth. It’s a little heady, as you might imagine with a book based on quotes from Puritan church fathers.

For anyone who loves church history and reading texts from historical church leaders, this is for you. It also makes a great gift for those in your life who love these kinds of things.

Again, they can be hard to find (and maybe a little expensive when you do) but well worth it.

You can shop on Amazon for Volume 1 here, or Volume 2 here.

You may also find them on Christianbook.com.

Experiencing God Day by Day

This is another classic devotional for the list, but it’s a great experience for any believer (pun intended).

Adapted from their popular Bible study, Experiencing God, the Blackabys pieced together a daily devotional that will walk you through the principles and concepts and how to apply them to your daily life over the course of a year.

There’s a good reason that so many believers have pointed to Experiencing God as a formative part of the their Christian life. Changing your perspective to look for God where He is already at work and then join Him in that work is an amazing shift in the methodology of ever Christian.

These simple devotions for each day will be sure to set your day off in the right mindset, and you’ll begin to see God’s work in a completely different light as the year goes on.

New Morning Mercies

This is probably my favorite devotional to recommend.

It’s equal parts encouraging, convicting, and challenging. Paul David Tripp has a great way of weaving a thread of grace into everything he writes, and this is no exception.

With this incredible devotional, you’re reminded to walk every day in the grace and mercy of Jesus. It’s a daily reminder to rely on God’s goodness and grace to get us through each and every day.

Especially after the last few years, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and outmatched. New Morning Mercies keeps us centered on God’s power and His grace. I would consider it a must-read for believers, in addition to the Bible, of course.

Christian Devotionals for Music lovers

The Trinity Project

While I certainly wouldn’t claim that the devotionals that we have published here at A Frank Voice are in the same class as the other devotionals mentioned here, I would be remiss if I didn’t at least talk about them.

The Trinity Project has been a project we’ve worked on for over two years, and completed with the release of Hymns of the Spirit in September of 2022. There are three principle volumes, Hymns of the Father, Hymns of the Son, and Hymns of the Spirit. There are also supplemental volumes such at The Soul Felt Its Worth a devotional specifically for Christmas in the month of December.

These are devotionals centered around the rich legacy of hymns that the church has used for hundreds of years in their worship settings.

In each devotional, there are daily devotions centered around a favorite hymn, its history, and the Scripture that inspired it.

This is a great devotional for anyone who loves hymns, history, and music.

My favorite way to enjoy these devotionals is with the all-in-one Trinity Devotionals.
